Revisiting Terry Pratchett’s Discworld taught me why I love reading

Terry Pratchett at his home in Wiltshire
Anyone who considers themselves a Terry Pratchett fan has known his end was coming ever since he revealed his “embuggerance” in 2007; that didn’t stop the news of his death from being desperately sad. One solace for devotees like me was the multitude of people who came forward and said they loved his Discworld. Even though Pratchett was the bestselling author of the 1990s, it still came as a pleasant surprise that he meant so much to so many.
Pratchett has been on my mind for the past six months. I loved his Discworld series as a teenager, devouring each garish, Josh Kirby-designed paperback twice a year. I had been wondering recently how Pratchett had shaped my adult tastes, how he served as the bridge between my childhood spent reading Roald Dahl and Janet and Allan Alhberg, and the books I love now.
How much of my enthusiasm for the giddy intelligence of Donna Tartt and David Foster Wallace, or Nick Harkaway and Margaret Atwood’s exuberant reimagining of what the fantastic can be, is traceable to my early immersion in Pratchett’s world, which is famously carried on the shoulders of four elephants, stood on the back of a space turtle?
So I did what anyone suffering from a bout of literary nostalgia would do, and impulse-bought Pratchett’s entire Discworld back catalogue, all 40 novels, last autumn on eBay. I have been charting my reread on my blog Pratchett Job, a site named with the best punning tribute to Terry that I could muster. It was launched to justify buying the huge box of books that now sits under my bed. But there was an element of fear to it: what if I went back to something I had truly loved and found it to be lacking?
Since October, I have been reading Pratchett almost exclusively, and I have found out that my younger self had decent taste in books. When I first picked them up in the early 90s, I was attracted by the humour, the inspired puns, the fantastical and apocalyptic nature of the books (four of Pratchett’s first five Discworld novels have a world-ending threat), and the sense that I was reading something a bit adult.
It turns out I missed a lot first time around: the literary allusions, the Macbeth homage that underpins Wyrd Sisters, or his sustained attack across several novels on a ridiculous figure known as Bloody Stupid Johnson (I still don’t know what he had against the author of The Unfortunates). I was unaware, too, of his love of craftsmanship and his pride in “a job well done” – not a surprise for a man who churned out two excellent Discworld books a year until only about 10 years ago.
The development of his writing style is similarly fascinating. His debut, The Colour of Magic, was a collection of vaguely related comic set pieces rather than a novel, but he quickly dropped the farce of early books and discovered the delight of a good plot. This gave us books such as Pyramids, Small Gods, Night Watch and The Fifth Elephant, novels that juggle thoughtful ideas with a compelling structure.
The novels also became creepier in the wake of his collaboration with Neil Gaiman on Good Omens. The threat of the evil multidimensional elves in Lords and Ladies, for example, is delightfully spinechilling. Pratchett was much darker than the cuddly, floppy-hatted gent his image suggested (as Gaiman has pointed out).
His books are fuelled by a deep-seated moral anger about the stupid things humans do: Pratchett was so furious because he was adamant we are all capable of so much more. His Watch novels deployed trolls and trans dwarves to rail against racism and social constraints, but did so by showing how we all have some degree of prejudice. By placing the tyrannical genius Havelock Vetinari, one part Steve Jobs to two parts Lex Luthor, as head of the city of Ankh-Morpork, Pratchett challenged us to embrace a dictator. And we do, because he makes the city work. Vetinari is my favourite Discworld character. I worry what this says about me.
As the Discworld series evolved, its fantastical aspects faded into the background, with technology replacing magic. To Pratchett, there was little difference between the two. If a piece of paper with some ink can change the world and free a wrongly accused murderer (as in the plot of The Truth, his riotous examination of the newspaper industry), how is that any different from a rabbit being pulled from a hat?
Above all, what Pratchett gave us is a 40-book love letter to reading. Stories are what the Discworld were built on, with his characters using them to explain the chaos of the world. While embracing storytelling, he also showed us its limitations. He was critical of characters who don’t live in the real world, but also showed how stories help us get one step closer to understanding.
The warmth of tributes to Pratchett makes me hopeful that he has finally been taken seriously as an author. The recent spat over fantasy tropes in Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Buried Giant shows how snobbery towards this genre still exists. Pratchett used, and had a blast subverting, fantasy tropes, from orphaned future kings (the wonderful Carrot from the Night Watch) to cynical anti-heroes who can’t help doing good (step forward Granny Weatherwax). His Discworld series forces us to think differently, whether about religion, attitudes towards gender roles, the role of law and leaders, or why we tell stories at all.
Rereading Pratchett taught me that there is a lot to gain from going back to your old favourites. His humour, warmth and constant need to challenge the reader mean he is one of the very best authors the UK has produced.

Fired Univision Host Pens Apology to Michelle Obama, Says Network Humiliated Him

http://www.theroot.com/content/dam/theroot/blogs/the_grapevine/2015/03/fired_univision_host_rodner_figueroa_pens_apology_letter_to_michelle_obama/screen_shot_20150313_at_7.13.26_am.png.CROP.rtstoryvar-medium.13.26_am.png
Rodner Figueroa was fired by Univision Wednesday after making an on-air joke comparing Michelle Obama to an ape from Planet of the Apes. Figueroa penned an open letter apologizing to Obama, but also aired his gripes about Univision.
In the letter, the former host of Sal y Pimienta said that the only reason he was fired was that someone in the first lady’s office complained about the joke and that he now feels humiliated by Univision. Figueroa said his comments were taken out of context.
“I want to clarify that I’m not racist and in no way was my comment directed at you, but rather the work of the [makeup] artist, which left much to be desired,” the letter read.
Figueroa also said that he’s far from racist because he’s biracial, with Latino parents, one of whom is black. He also noted that he was one of the first openly gay personalities on Univision and even voted for President Barack Obama, twice.
“I’ve been an activist for causes in favor of minorities, as I have been discriminated against,” Figueroa wrote.
The comment that got Figueroa fired was aired during El Gordo y la Flaca while makeup artist Paolo Ballestero was showing how he uses makeup to transform into celebrities. When he showed the hosts his first lady transformation, Figueroa made the comment.
“Mind you, you know that Michelle Obama looks like she’s part of the cast of Planet of the Apes, the film,” Figueroa said.

What is bitcoin?…

It is a brand-new currency designed to make purchasing easier. They offer less transaction fees for their members, less clutter, no need for traditional banks, and provide a much simpler way to make payments transparent. You can use bitcoin to book flights, utilize travel agencies, buy Apple products, use a premium dating service, buy clothes, web-hosting, alongside many other prominent companies.

The bitcoin QT software allows people to generate digital currency without the use of any type of third-party agent.
The bitcoin QT comes with a unique address for you to send and receive payments with bitcoin. This means you can remain totally anonymous without the need of a bank account, your Social Security number, or even your name. What you will need however, is bitcoin mining equipment to help generate bitcoin's because the CPU power alone probably won't generate enough cryptocurrency for you to use to make any type of purchase.

Once generated, these bitcoin's will be stored in the bitcoin QT wallet. The difference between other bitcoin wallets like Coinbase or Blockchain.info is you need to set them up with your name, Social Security Number, email, or other sensitive data you might not want to pass along.

Since bitcoin mining is becoming a thing of the past, more & more people are trickling into cloud mining. This will entail not being able to remain anonymous so setting up an online digital wallet will not be a bad thing. The security is still top-notch for many of the top online wallets so the need to be anonymous is pretty much non-existent.

When I get asked the question what is bitcoin? I just tell folks it's a brand-new currency that can be developed out of thin air because you don't have to have a bank account, Social Security number, or even a name. You just have to have the desire to learn a new concept designed to eliminate all the fallacies that has been created over the years by the corrupt banking system, of corporate America, corrupt governments across the globe, and provide a solution for those problems.

The bitcoin QT is the main source for generating bitcoin without the hassle of releasing any type of sensitive information that you don't want to. When people say bitcoin is not anonymous this is not true. In fact, it can be so secretive that a company you join won't have access to any of your information or transactional records. This is different when you go to a job and you give them your Social Security number, your name, your address, and a whole bunch of paper work releasing personal information and records. All of this stuff is designed to keep track of you and your finances while on earth. Now there is a system out there that you can actually generate an income without people knowing who you are, which is pretty neat. And all you need is a computer, some bitcoin mining equipment, and the bitcoin QT software downloaded on your computer and you can begin to generate digital currency that everybody is talking about now.

How To Make The Ultimate Winter Drinks

How To Make The Ultimate Winter Drinks

Coffee shop chains are increasingly offering seasonal drinks such as Black Forest Hot Chocolate, Spiced Chai Latte or Gingerbread Cappuccinos and judging by the queues in Costa and Starbucks, they are hugely popular. A glance behind the counter while waiting in line reveals countless bottles of gingerbread syrup and tubs of chocolate shavings. So how do you make great winter hot drinks for your coffee shop, cafĂ© or just to enjoy at home? It’s much easier than you might think!

Winter Drinks

As I write this article, it’s early September and the thought of ice and snow are still a very long way off. However, anyone who lives in the UK will know that the weather changes quickly at this time of year and bonfire night is just around the corner.

We noticed a trend towards sweet hot drinks last winter, and in particular, hot chocolate and coffee flavoured with gingerbread, orange and so on. And this is where you can really let your creative side and your imagination run riot. Flavouring syrups used to be available in just a handful of flavours like caramel and vanilla, and while they are still the most popular, they have been joined by well over 100 flavours that allow you to do pretty much anything you like.

For instance, the Monin syrups range extends to over 100 flavours on its own, and while some are designed for use in cocktails and cold drinks, around half can be used for hot drinks.

OK, so as an example, you are making hot chocolate and adding whipped cream to the top for your customers. How to you offer something that the coffee shop over the road isn’t serving to their customers? Well it’s easy – with a few different flavours of syrup, why not create a menu board and offer Hot Chocolate Orange just by adding a few shots of Monin Orange Curacao syrup.

Orange Hot Chocolate

You can add to your list by offering Black Forest Hot Chocolate, Cinnamon, or even do something different and serve white hot chocolate – there are a number of great white chocolate powders available by Zuma and others. One of last year’s biggest successes was Toffee Apple Hot Chocolate – just use the gorgeous Sweetbird toffee apple flavour and add a few shots to your finished drinks.

Try the same with coffee – you’re already making cappuccinos and lattes, so for the sake of a few bottles of syrups, why not create another drinks list and serve frothy coffees flavoured with Gingerbread syrup? Your list could also include cinnamon, shortbread, pecan or another one of last year’s favourites, Egg Nog. There’s a Routin Egg Nog syrup that is great in both coffee and hot chocolate, and again, it livens up what could be an otherwise dull drinks menu.

No article about winter drinks could be complete without mentioning Chai Latte. Popular in other countries for years, it took some time to gain popularity here in the UK but it now a firm favourite for many people. It’s simply a mix of tea and spices that can be mixed with either milk or water depending on taste, and is supplied in a range of flavours including Spiced Chai (which is a cinnamon flavoured drink) and other more adventurous ones such as Mango.

We hope you’ll choose to get creative and make coffees, chai and hot chocolate that your customers will be queueing up for on the cold winter days ahead. Please share any of your favourite creations with us, we’d love to see them!

5 Alternatives To Pumpkin Spiced Latte

Every year, we notice a shift in what drinks people are ordering as soon as the weather changes. Autumn arrived here over the weekend and already we’re talking with customers about Gingerbread Latte and Pumpkin Spice Syrups. Seems like only yesterday it was smoothies and frappes!

While the major coffee shop chains such as Starbucks are sticking with their tried and tested recipes from last autumn, including their big-selling Pumpkin Spiced Latte, other smaller independent coffee shops are experimenting with what could be the next wave of autumn hot drinks. We thought we’d take a look at a few and see if they will ever catch on.

Toffee Apple Hot Chocolate

This became quite popular last year and we expect it will be even more of a success this autumn as customers become ever more open to trying new versions of their trusty hot chocolate. Sweetbird make an excellent Toffee Apple Syrup which can be added the finished drink before serving to add an extra dose of sweetness and a warm apple flavour that works so well with chocolate. Of course you can still add your own flourishes before serving, such as whipped cream, brandy snaps, chocolate sauce, whatever takes your fancy. Be careful not to overload it with toppings though, the drink will already be quite sweet as it is.

Toffee Apple Syrup

A perennial favourite, there can’t be too many coffee houses that don’t have this on their menu already at this time of year. Why not make it slightly different this year and add a shot of vanilla or cinnamon syrup, both of which work beautifully with gingerbread flavours. A little grated orange or lemon zest on the top of the foam can also work, provided you don’t overdo it!

Spiced Chai Cappuccino

Very easy to make and, in our opinion, a rather underrated recipe. It may be that many customers don’t know what to expect when it appears on a drinks menu, and may not make the connection that it’s flavoured with cinnamon. However, we sell a lot of this syrup throughout autumn and winter, so we can vouch for the fact that it’s still fairly popular. Try it on your coffee menu and it’ll definitely have a loyal following.

Frosted Mint Hot Chocolate

Nothing innovative with this one really, Costa Coffee have been serving it for a couple of years now and with good results. Add either Monin Frosted Mint syrup or try using Black Forest Syrup as an alternative – both work well in hot chocolate, as does Tiramisu. Again, your own flourishes before serving are the key to making this stand out from the competition, a few slithers of orange peel or maybe some grated nutmeg or cinnamon can transform them into something unique to you.

Pumpkin Spice and Vanilla White Hot Chocolate

OK, so we couldn’t complete a list of alternatives to Pumpkin Spice without including Pumpkin Spice? Hear us out though, this is no ordinary Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte, it’s so simple you’ll wonder why you’ve not come across it before.

Make your normal hot chocolate with white hot chocolate powder instead of regular dark chocolate, and then just add a pump of Pumpkin Spice and a pump of Vanilla syrup before adding cream and a sprinkle of either cinnamon or cocoa powder. A lovely final touch is to add a few slithers of orange peel for that autumn look. Gorgeous!

Finally, if you’re stuck for some inspiration, take a look at the Monin website – they have hundreds of recipes that you can adapt to suit you. There’s no need to follow the crowd this autumn and winter, get out there and create something new – your customers will love you for it!
